Choosing Between Elk, Mule Deer, and Whitetail Antler

Each species has its own character. Elk antler is the largest and heaviest, with a pale, ivory-toned palm that reads as a true statement piece in great rooms and lodge-style spaces – it’s what you’ll find in our largest designs, like the Selway and Yellowstone.

Mule deer antler is more compact with a distinctive forked, branching shape, making it a good fit for dining rooms and mid-size spaces.

Whitetail antler has the most classic silhouette – narrower tines and a warmer tan tone – and it’s the most traditional choice for cabins, farmhouses, and lodge interiors. For a bigger statement in the same style, our XL 6-Tier is a large antler chandelier built specifically for great rooms and vaulted ceilings.

All three are genuine, naturally shed or sustainably sourced antler, never cast or molded. If you’re browsing specifically for an elk antler chandelier, our elk designs are the largest pieces in the collection.

And if you’ve seen the term “deer horn chandelier” used online, that usually refers to the same whitetail or mule deer antler pieces described above — deer don’t actually grow horns, only antlers, but the search term persists.

Placement and Hanging Height Basics

As a general rule, a chandelier over a dining table should hang so its bottom edge sits 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop, and in an entryway or stairwell with no furniture below it, plan for at least 7 feet of clearance from the floor.

Caring for a Real Antler Chandelier

Real antler is a natural material and needs very little upkeep. Dust it occasionally with a soft, dry cloth or a can of compressed air to reach between the tines, and keep it away from constant steam or high humidity, such as a shower stall or a stovetop.

With basic care, a real antler chandelier is built to last for decades, and because every antler is a little different, no two of our fixtures are ever exactly alike.
